Highland University Students accepts Governor’s Citizenship Award

(Highlands, NC) Five students from Highland University will be recognized as winners of the Governor’s Citizenship Award on Nov. 15 at the governor’s mansion.

“To see the caliber of leaders in so many disciplines is very encouraging for the future of this state.” said Gov. Bev Perdue.

Students were chosen based on a 1,000 word essay on how they see their leadership in the modern world because of their current role as a community activist in their hometown. More than 550 students entered their essays.

The students are:

Rose Madison, a junior, biology and pre-med major, from Highlands, North Carolina.

Ryan Cartwright, a sophomore, mechanical engineering major, from Andrews, North Carolina.

Heather Bollinger, a sophomore, teacher education major, from Waynesville, North Carolina.

Bryon Templeton, a senior, sociology major, from Maggie Valley, North Carolina.

Marjorie Abbott, a junior, music major, from Candler, North Carolina

Students will be honored with a special ceremony and dinner followed by receiving a plaque and a $1,000 scholarship for their college tuition.

This is the fifth year for the award. Becoming a winner required an interview with Gov. Bev Perdue, and the 16 colleges in North Carolina representatives from the North Carolina Leadership Council determined the 5 winners.
